The International Population Data Linkage Network (IPDLN) conference has long served as a global meeting point for researchers, data custodians, policymakers, and infrastructure providers working at the forefront of population data science. This special issue brings together a selection of contributions from IPDLN 2026, hosted in Rotterdam.

The papers collected here reflect both the growing maturity and the increasing diversity of the field. Across domains including health, education, social policy, demography, and digital society, contributors demonstrate how linked population data can generate actionable insights while navigating evolving ethical, legal, and technical challenges. The issue highlights advances in data linkage methodologies, secure research environments, privacy-enhancing technologies, public engagement, and international collaboration. These are all themes that are increasingly central to contemporary population data science.

IPDLN 2026 took place at a moment of rapid transformation in the global data landscape. The expansion of administrative and digital trace data, advances in computational methods and artificial intelligence, and growing attention to governance, transparency, and trust are reshaping how population-level research is conducted. The contributions in this issue showcase both methodological innovation and a strong commitment to responsible, socially beneficial data use.

As guest editors, we would like to thank all authors, reviewers, conference organisers, and the editorial team at IJPDS for their efforts in bringing this special issue together. We hope that the collection captures the collaborative and interdisciplinary spirit of the IPDLN community and serves as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers worldwide.
